PREVIEW: The Teaching Artist Showcase
Opening Reception 04/25 @ The Arts Center of the Capital Region, Troy
For the second year in a row, the Teaching Artist Showcase is offering a special chance to experience the diverse array of talent the teaching staff at the Arts Center has to offer. The exhibition consists of work created entirely by Arts Center staff and is an opportunity to celebrate and support those who enrich the local arts community with their skills and expertise.
“Everything that we teach here is covered within the show,” says Joe Mastroianni, curator and Vice President of Programs for the Arts Center. Stained glass, painting and drawing, installation work, woodworking, and ceramics are just a sample of what’s on display.
“It’s a way to have the artists that teach with us show what they do. It may be something they teach in our classes, but it's meant to be a space for them to showcase themselves outside of the Arts Center, as well.”
The show is also an opportunity for staff members that may focus solely on education to show their work in an exhibition or gallery format.
“I want people to see how talented artists in the Capital Region are. That's my biggest thing. Our locals have done great work, not just being educators, but being artists as well… [the show] is approachable, too. You could have someone go into the gallery that is super into conceptual art and enjoy it just as much as somebody who knows nothing about how to view art in any way, which is kind of cool.”
If you just can’t get enough great community artwork, the Arts Center’s annual members-only Fence Show opens on June 18. Members can submit two pieces of artwork to be part of the show, which incorporates 350+ works of art—floor to ceiling!—with over 150 artists involved. Participation continues to grow, attracting more people each year. You won’t want to miss out.
The Teaching Artist Showcase features artwork by Linda Allen, Deborah Bayly, Alta Buden, Carol Bollinger Green, Rachael Duchnycz, Kayden Fitzgerald, Gabbé, Echo Goff, Suzy Gerbe, John Hampshire, Ali Herrmann, Mary Huls, Kayla Jolin, Kimberly Jones, Bob Kehn, Alex Kirsch, Natalie Kossack, Diane Lemieur, Terri Lukacko, Mary Jane Lynd, Jeanine Mitchell, Cynthia DiDonna-Nethaway, Gina Occhiogrosso, George Rutledge, Dani Ruf, Colleen Skiff, Kelly Smith, Erin White, and Thom Williams.
The Teaching Artist Showcase is on view from April 14 - May 20 at The Arts Center of the Capital Region (Jane Altes Gallery), 265 River Street in Troy, with the opening ceremony taking place during Troy Night Out on April 25 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.
