WHAT’S HAPPENING: UNSIGNED518’S WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT, 11/14/24
every week, our very own andy scullin shines a spotlight on what’s happening the weekend ahead, via his unsigned518 podcast.
In my first episode back from being sick as a dog for almost two weeks, I spotlight some great local music, events and even a live-stream from one of the 518’s favorite bands. This is also the first episode with the brand new “Weekend Spotlight Theme Song” from local ska-punkers and friends of the show, Girth Control.
So, what’s going on this weekend?
Up first is DJ Hollyw88d at the Washington Tavern for their opening night tomorrow, 11/15. He will be spinning tunes from 10:30pm to 3am. DJ Hollyw88d is well known for bringing the party, and being that it goes until 3am, this would be a perfect after-party if you had caught some live music earlier in the evening. There is no cover for this 21+ party.
If you feel like staying home on Saturday, you can still catch some live music from one of the 518’s favorite bands, The Sugar Hold. The quintet will be heading down to Poughkeepsie for an episode of Our Band Show, which you can watch live on YouTube. Our Band Show is a program that not only has live performances, but also interviews with the band, and even questions from the home audience. It is really a fun watch, and being able to interact with the bands adds an extra layer of cool. This will air on Our Band Show’s YouTube page at 7pm on Saturday.
If you do not feel like staying home on Saturday, there’s still fun to be had. The Sound Minds and Before The Warning will be rocking Albany Distilling Co. starting at 6pm. They will have drink specials, Defazios pizza and rockin’ tunes all night. Before The Warning were on this week’s episode of Unsigned518 and were excited to let me know that this show will be serving as their album release party! So, please go support local music and check these two bands out.
While I am obviously hyper-focused on local music in the 518, I recently made a trip up to Canada for an unsigned music festival called Gussapolooza. I was there for three days with a booth and a mobile podcasting set up. I recorded several interviews with the artists involved, but I also made some very fast friends with the boys at Bad Club Media, who are doing pretty much the same thing I am doing, but up near Toronto. Soon after, we decided that we should do a weekly “band swap”. So, every week I send them a 518 band for a segment on their show called “Andy’s Recs” and they send me a band for the Weekend Spotlight every week. So, please check out my friends Jake and Mike with Bad Club Media on Instagram. They are hilarious and I know that you will dig them. This week on “Bands You Should Know” is a punk band from Toronto called Het Up.
Being part of the startup team for Metroland now is really a dream for me. One of the things I enjoy about it the most is the collaborations with other creatives in the area. We really do all seem to be working towards the same goal and I truly believe that over time it will do nothing but strengthen our scene, and give artists a chance to be seen and heard. With that in mind, one of my favorite dudes, TJ Foster, works tirelessly not only on Metroland, but as a producer, writer, editor, and musician himself, fronting 518 superstars, E.R.I.E. I am thrilled to be able to assist TJ with his “Hot Singles In Your Area” that he compiles each month. Once he publishes the list, I create an official Spotify playlist for you to download, so you can always have fresh 518 tunes in your pocket. Also, every week I will play a song from the list on the Weekend Spotlight. This week, I chose Canella’s “Cookie Sweet,” which you can stream on “Metroland Now - Hot Singles In Your Area for October 2024” here:
