PREVIEW: ‘Til Death: A Cinematic Study of Dying Love
10/30/2024 at Saratoga Arts
“For the budding filmmakers we’re training here, it’s so important to know that there’s a burgeoning scene of active, talented filmmakers all around them.”
As the Halloween season approaches, there is no shortage of chilling events to sink your fangs into. Up in Saratoga Springs on Wednesday, Skidmore College, Saratoga Arts, and the 518 Film Network are collaborating to present an evening of creativity and cinematic artistry dubbed 'Til Death: A Cinematic Study of Dying Love.
This Halloween celebration of local filmmaking will take place on Wednesday, October 30th at Saratoga Arts and aims to support regional filmmaking through the screening of locally produced short films in a block curated by Skidmore College student Ryan Thompson.
The evening will commence with a VIP cocktail hour at 6:00 PM, offering guests a delightful selection of beer, wine, champagne, and gourmet hors d'oeuvres for $50. This exclusive reception presents an excellent opportunity for networking with local filmmakers, artists, and community members.
At 7:30 PM, the film screening will begin, showcasing a curated selection of short films that exemplify the diverse talent within our local film community. Tickets for the screening are priced at $20, and guests are encouraged to arrive by 7:15 PM to ensure a timely start. Following the screening, a Q&A session with the filmmakers and Thompson, moderated by Skidmore professor Adam Tinkle, will provide deeper insights into the creative process and inspirations behind the works.
“'Til Death is the result of Ryan's final project for the Film Curation class I offered for the first time at Skidmore last Spring,” Professor Tinkle notes. “All these budding curators were tasked with curating a mock program, and Ryan’s drew from 25 short films recently created by members of the 518 Film Network here in the Capital Region. Ryan’s project was so good that we felt we had to actually put on the event and share these films, under this framing, with both on- and off-campus communities.
“For the budding filmmakers we’re training here, it’s so important to know that there’s a burgeoning scene of active, talented filmmakers all around them. I’m hopeful that through initiatives like this one, we can bring students into the creative world of regional filmmakers, providing networking opportunities that give professionals and students access to bigger and more diverse talent pools they’d ordinarily never get to meet.”
“There’s been a really exciting push in the last few years to inspire local filmmakers to create work”, says Board President of the 518 Film Network, Spencer Sherry. “When we were offered an opportunity to connect with local students to explore how that work could be seen in new ways, we jumped at it. Ryan’s proposed theme and structure was so much fun that it immediately made us want to showcase the films in that way and celebrate the art of curation.”
All proceeds from the event will be shared between Saratoga Arts and the 518 Film Network, both of which are dedicated to nurturing and promoting local artistic initiatives. Attendees are encouraged to dress up according to the theme “Elegant Decay”, with styling inspiration available on Instagram (@518filmnetwork).
