ALBUM REVIEW: The Snorts - pitter patter

“Bombastic, layered and full songs that are punctuated with clever, playful, yet poignant lyrics are what make pitter patter stand tall amongst recent regional releases…”

For a brash, gravelly voice, Aaron Stoquert comes in like a calming comfort on opening track, “weird, but ok”. Even after the song’s false build-up gives way to an acoustic guitar, the giddy anticipation that it is about to get real loud, is ever present.

The Snorts do not disappoint.

Bombastic, layered and full songs that are punctuated with clever and playful, yet poignant lyrics are what make pitter patter stand tall amongst recent regional releases. At just under 13 minutes, these five songs leave no room for any filler or downtime. The EP grabs you from the first few seconds and drags you right into the circle-pit of sorrow, joy, confusion and humor that defines The Snorts.

pitter patter has seasonings of 80’s punk, 90s alternative, and mid-aughts emo, sometimes within the same two minute song. Every single one of these tunes are short, urgent, and punchy.

“pocket cowboys” stands out as a potential college radio hit, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that one getting regional or even national airplay.

Stoquert’s vocals are some of the most reliably powerful in the 518. That, coupled with his witty, self-deprecating lyrics that are more aimed at humor than pity, makes him a solid frontman. Even when repeatedly screaming “What the fuck?” on the song “wat. the. fuk.”, you believe that there is a deeper meaning behind Stoquert’s screams, and that he is not just cursing for the sake of doing it. It helps cement The Snorts as an exciting band to follow.

From the opening four-on-the-floor drumbeat, coupled with the clean melodic guitars on “weird, but ok”, to the Devo-esque refrain on “stupid, stupid”, this EP scratches nearly every itch that a grown-up punker could have.
