Taina Asili Drops A Powerful, Topical New Single
To say it’s an appropriate time for Taina Asili’s new single would be an understatement. “No Es Mi Presidente (Remix)” was released this week, and you don’t need to be bilingual to decipher the relevance here.
The single was originally released in 2017 – apropos, yet again – Asili has reimagined her bilingual anthem to confront the enduring struggles of injustice that are unfortunately still ever present. In revisiting this song, she sets out to renew hope for systemic change.
“Revisiting this song felt deeply significant as we reflect on the struggles and victories of recent years,” she says. “The heart of this song was never about one individual, nor one administration, but rather, the strength of communities to rise, resist, and reimagine a future of justice and liberation together. “
Based right here in upstate New York, Asili is a Puerto Rican singer, composer, and interdisciplinary artist, well known for her dynamic music that uplifts movements for racial, gender, and climate justice. Her multilingual sound crosses genre lines effortlessly, blending Afro-Caribbean rhythms, salsa, rock, reggaeton, Afrobeat, and more, creating an authentic sound that resonates deeply with diverse audiences. Her efforts writing songs for social justice has also been celebrated by NPR, Billboard, and Democracy Now!.
Additionally, Asili is a bona fide activist, earning her local honors like City of Albany Commission on Human Rights’ declaration of "Taína Asili Day," the Citizen Action of New York’s Jim Perry Progressive Leadership Award, the Fabulous Feminist Creative Force Award from the Holding Our Own Foundation, and the LGBTQ Advocate Award from In Our Own Voices.
“I am deeply committed to using my platform to uplift our community’s stories and struggles through art,” Asili told us, passionately.
“No Es Mi Presidente”’s accompanying music video, also a remix, features striking new dance footage choreographed in collaboration with artist Hettie Barnhill, founder of Create A Space Now. The monochromatic visuals and emotive choreography underscore the themes of resistance, unity, and liberation, amplifying the song’s urgent call for justice.
