PREVIEW: The Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate NY Presents "Once on This Island"
This Thursday, prepare for an unforgettable experience as Once on This Island takes the stage. Directed and choreographed by the talented Hettie Barnhill, and presented by the Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York, this award-winning musical is an enchanting blend of theater, dance, and music that will warm your heart during the coldest days of February.
Once on This Island is a Caribbean retelling of "The Little Mermaid" story, set in a fictionalized version of Haiti. It encompasses the three integral aspects of musical theater: acting, music, and dance. The music plays a vital role, conveying the story through song, while the choreography embodies the narrative, creating a lively celebration of the themes presented. It’s a dynamic fusion of dancing, singing, and deep emotions.
Initially, there were concerns about launching this musical during such chilly weather. However, ever the optimist, Barnhill thought, “What better time than now?”
“We're going to bring the sun; we're going to bring the warmth. It’s worth stepping out at a time when we tend to stay in—to participate in something that will make you feel good from the inside out. I definitely think it breathes life into wintertime.”
Opening on February 6th and running through February 16th, this vibrant production invites you to step out of your home and into a world rich with emotion, celebration, and storytelling. With a cast of 24 actors of color, this marks a historic first for this musical in the Capital Region. You’ll witness a powerful narrative about love, class, and the complexities of life, all seen through the eyes of the fearless peasant girl, Ti Moune. Guided by island gods, Ti Moune’s journey is as inspiring as it is poignant, exploring themes that resonate deeply in today’s society.
Barnhill's direction brings a unique vision to the show, showcasing the incredible talent within the local community while fostering an inclusive environment for many first-time performers. Once on This Island is more than just a musical—it’s a vibrant showcase of artistry and collaboration, demonstrating what can happen when passion takes center stage.
“It's a beautiful love story with great music and a realness that resonates with where we are in society today,” Barnhill says.
Join us for this transformative production on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, and witness a tale of love and resilience that embodies the warm spirit of the island, reminding us that every performance is an opportunity to shine.
